Obesity in America appears as an epidemic more devastating than ever
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a disturbing report. It states that 40 percent of adults and 20 per cent of adolescents are suffering from obesity in America. These have been the highest recorded rates for obesity in America so far.
“It’s difficult to be optimistic at this point. The numbers for obesity in America have been steadily increasing. It is for both children and adults in spite of many public health efforts to improve nutrition and physical activity.” Says Dr. Frank Hu, chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Nearly 40 percent of adults are suffering from obesity in America
The continued numbers for increasing obesity in America in youngsters is very concerning for their long term health. One in five adolescents , aged 12-19, one in five kids, aged 6-11 and one in ten pre schoolers, aged 2-5 are obese and not just overweight.
Having a body-mass-index of more than 30 is medically termed Obesity. Earlier in October, the World Health Organization had published a report on childhood obesity soaring around the world. It stated that the same has increased more than ten fold over the past four decades.
The disturbing fact is that overweight and obese children have a higher risk to stay obese . Also Childhood obesity is linked to a higher chance of early death in adulthood.
According to earlier reports, overall 70.7 percent of people are suffering from weight issues or obesity in America . That means an unhealthy lifestyle and weight has become a trend . With fitter Americans- A BMI of less than 25-now in the minority.
However the CDC report doesn’t reveal why the obesity crisis continues to worsen. A recent study conducted by epidemiologists at Georgia Southern University shares its findings. It states that fewer Americans particularly women are trying to lose weight. Public health experts blame unhealthy diets and lack of exercise for obesity in America.
“There are still lots of cheap, accessible and highly processed foods available everywhere anytime. And the irony is people are doing more recreational activities these days. But the overall activity level, household and occupational activity has decreased in the recent years” says Hu.
It is concerning that eighty percent of Americans don’t meet the government’s national physical activity recommendations for aerobic activity and muscle strengthening. Also around 45 percent of adults are not active to even achieve health benefits.
Inadequate Sleep cause of obesity in America
According to the Institute of Medicine, an estimate of 50-70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders. In addition to unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, sleep deprivation is also a possible reason for increasing obesity in America.
Inadequate sleep is a risk factor for childhood and adult obesity in America, says Hu. Sleep deprived people may be too tired to exercise. They tend to take in more calories and may undergo hormone changes that control appetite.
Consequences of Obesity in America
The epidemic obesity in America has bad consequences . High Blood Pressure, diabetes , heart diseases are killing Americans annually at a worrisome rate. It has also become a humongous burden on the American Health care system. It is now making up to $190 billion a year in weight related medical bills.
