In 1994 , The National Weight Control Registry started keeping track of the people who lost more than 30 pounds and kept those extra pounds off for an year or longer. Till this day, more than 10,000 Americans have found a place in the registry. The average weight loss was 66 pounds, and Americans were able to keep that off for more than five years. There are several studies that are being conducted to understand the cause of this success to advice others. Majority of them said they adjusted their diet accordingly and started working out. Others said they started having breakfast regularly, cut down on television time and checked the weighing scale regularly.
Weight Loss Myth #2: Eat less and Exercise more to lose weight
On one hand the National Weight Control Registry shows that people who lose weight successfully change their eating habits and increase their outdoor activities or exercise, However that’s not the complete side of the story. There are a lot more factors involved than just diet and exercise. A person’s genetics, his present environment, their present emotional state does affect a lot to the weight loss regimen. Some researchers also believe that the common advice to count your calories also does not work sometime. They feel so because it ignores the above mentioned factors. Researchers also argued that rather than focusing on a calorie consumed vs calorie burned equation, more attention needs to be paid on the overall diet of a person.
According to Dr. David Ludwig “Many people try to eat less and exercise more , that’s where the lose and metabolism wins.” Dr. Ludwig is the director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. He adds that “Simply looking at calories is misguided at best and potentially harmful because it completely disregards how these calories are affecting our hormones and metabolism, and ultimately our ability to stick to a diet”
If people concentrate on having a balanced diet, rather than eating processed or saturated fats, they would themselves see the difference.
Weight Loss Myth #3: Each calorie is the same
Yes, you read that right. If you want to lose weight, you should pay attention to calories and where they come from. Although many health experts argue that drinking a zero calorie soda is not better for you than a handful of almonds. Studies show that keeping a food diary is a helpful way for people to get insight into what they are eating. It helps in understanding where the calories are coming from and where does the person require a change.

There have been numerous studies that show that with just a 10% weight loss, people would experience noticeable changes in their blood pressure and blood sugar control while lowering their risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

About 45% of people in the National Weight Control registry say that they have lost weight following variety of diets on their own and around 55% say that they followed a structural diet plan. There were many who tried more than one diet plan to actually see the results and keep the weight off for a long term. Weight Loss Myth #6: The cause of Obesity in Americans is over eating
That can be one but not the only reason. There are numerous factors that have contributed to the obesity epidemic in America. The fact that most of us prefer high calorie processed foods and drinks is quite disturbing. Also researchers believe that we can link weight gain to Americans exposure to chemicals like the bisphenol A (BPA) found in everyday items like canned food containers and cash register receipts. Americans are also increasingly sedentary that has increased the risk for diseases like obesity and diabetes.
Weight Loss Myth #7: Give up alcohol to lose weight
Alcohol obviously confers a lot of calories. That is the reason why weight loss plans often recommend cutting down on drinks. However New York Times has reported earlier that heavy drinking is directly linked to weight gain and obesity, However light and moderate drinking does not affect the body that much. Also different people react differently to the same foods. So a beer could have a big effect on some people, whereas it could just be a stress buster for some.
Weight Loss Myth #8: You need more willpower to lose weight
Will power is a key player in terms of weight loss or in any case. However there are other factors involved like genetic, environmental and others that play into a person’s size. Research shows that when people lose weight many biological factors come into play. That makes it harder for them to keep the extra pounds off them for a long period of time.
According to Mr. Kevin Hall who happens to be a scientist at the National Institute of Health “ When a person begins losing a lot of weight, their metabolism gets out of control and their appetite increases uncontrollably causing them to take in around 100 calories for every two pounds they lose. That doesn’t mean that it is impossible to keep weight off for a long term . It means that is you struggle to do so, it’s not a reflection of your willpower, motivation or work ethics.
